My Father was diagnosed in August 2002 of Alzheimer’s.
He had always been the strong tough man that had even won awards for his work ethics and for never missing a day of work. He was the strength of our family. He was passionate about running and keeping busy. At age 69 he was in great shape an appeared to look years younger than his real age. However, at the age of 72 he suffered some mini strokes. Being a tough and strong man he did not go to the Doctor for another 5 months. My Father was then diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in August 2002 believed to be brought on by the mini strokes. The physician told my family that his disease was going to be extremely hard due to the fact he was in great physical shape.
As my Father would go through rapid declining changes, my Family and I struggled coping with the rapid changes brought on by this disease, his condition was very aggressive. By 2003 through 2004 he would not know his family or know how to even walk. Now bed ridden he would lay there not knowing anyone, not being able to leave his bed for the next 3 years.
My Brother and Sister lived approximately 40 miles from my Parents home. This was truly a blessing. because they helped my Mother in what ever she needed. My Sister and her Family, GOD bless them would run the roads to keep their home up and make sure our Mother was taking care of. Unfortunately I lived over 2200 miles away and was only able to come home once a year to help. Although my Mother had love and support she still was the caregiver. Through those years of lifting, bathing, changing his bed and clothes, and feeding him took a toll on my Mother’s health.
Act of Love
My wonderful beautiful Mother would be by his side taking care of him 24 hours a day for the next 3 years until he passed away March 1st 2007. I watched an Angel from Heaven take Loving, Thoughtful, Gentle care of my Father. It was extremely difficult for her but she loved him and loved taking care of him so he could live the rest of his life living in his home with his loving Family. My Mother has always been a Gift from GOD to me. But after her selfless act of love to my Father everyone can now see my Mother through my eyes.
